How to Clean Fuel Sediment Cup & Tank Strainer to Prevent Fuel Starvation

When a power weeder works under load with rotary blades buried 6 inches into the soil, fuel consumption triples compared to idling. If the fuel tap sediment cup is clogged, the engine bogs down and starves of fuel under heavy tilling.

Step-by-Step Sediment Bowl Cleaning

  1. Close the fuel cock lever to the 'OFF' position.
  2. Unscrew the 10mm hexagonal sediment bowl under the fuel tap with a small spanner.
  3. Inspect the small rubber O-ring seal—take care not to lose or pinch it, or the bowl will weep petrol.
  4. Wash out rust silt, sand, and water droplets from the bottom of the aluminum cup using clean petrol.
  5. Clean the fine cylindrical brass screen above the bowl with a soft brush.
  6. Reassemble and tighten gently by hand plus a quarter turn with a spanner to avoid crushing the rubber gasket.
