Why Power Weeder Starts but Shuts Down After 2 Minutes (Choke & Tank Cap Vacuum)

One of the most frustrating field problems is an engine that cranks easily, idles smoothly for 90 seconds, and abruptly dies the moment you engage the clutch or open the throttle to cultivate.

Cause 1: Vacuum Lock in the Fuel Tank Cap

The fuel tank cap contains a micro air breather hole. If this hole gets plugged with field dust, clay, or sugarcane trash:

  • The fuel pump or gravity feed pulls petrol out of the tank, creating an airtight vacuum inside.
  • Once the negative vacuum pressure exceeds gravity, fuel stops flowing into the carburetor bowl completely.
  • The Quick Diagnostic Test: The moment the engine dies, immediately loosen the fuel cap. If you hear a loud hissing 'whoosh' sound of air sucking into the tank and the engine restarts instantly afterward, the breather vent is blocked. Clear it with a thin needle or compressed air.

Cause 2: Operating with Choke Half-Closed

The choke flap is strictly for cold starting (10–15 seconds). Leaving the choke lever in the closed or mid position after the engine warms up suffocates the engine with raw petrol, fouling the spark plug and causing shutdown under load.

Cause 3: Partially Clogged Low-Speed Pilot Jet

Inside the carburetor body, the tiny idle pilot jet delivers fuel at idle and initial throttle transition. Spray carburetor cleaner through the pilot air passage until a solid jet emerges into the venturi.
