Power Weeder Axle Oil Seal Replacement: Fixing Gearbox Oil Leaking on Blades

Gear oil leaking around the hexagonal output axle of the rotary tines is the single most common mechanical defect on power weeders after 100 hours of tough fieldwork.

Root Cause: Entangled Weed Roots Dragged into Seal

Fibrous weeds (such as Bermuda grass / Cynodon / Doob grass) wrap tightly around the rotating output axle:

  • As the axle spins at 120 RPM, weed fibers are forced deep into the flexible oil seal rubber lip.
  • Frictional heat cuts and melts the rubber seal, allowing thick EP-90 gear oil to leak all over the blades.
  • Once the oil level drops, abrasive soil enters the gearbox casing, destroying the tapered roller bearings and bronze worm gear.

Step-by-Step Oil Seal Replacement

  1. Remove the rotary tines and hexagonal locking hitch pins.
  2. Carefully unwrap and cut away all entangled roots, wire, and plastic twine from the axle shaft.
  3. Pry out the damaged oil seal using a flat-blade screwdriver or hook puller.
  4. Clean the axle shaft with petrol and inspect for grooving. If the shaft has a wear groove, seat the replacement seal 2mm further in or out.
  5. Press in a new Double-Lip Oil Seal (featuring an internal stainless steel garter spring) with grease packed into the inner lip. Tap gently using an appropriately sized socket.
  6. Prevention: Always install grass-cutting anti-wrap circular discs between the rotary blade hub and the gearbox casing.
