4-Stroke Engine Maintenance Guide for Agricultural Machines

Your 4-stroke petrol engine is the heart of your power weeder, water pump, or earth auger. A well-maintained engine runs for 5 to 8 years with minimal repairs. Neglect it for one season and you are looking at a costly overhaul. This guide covers everything a farmer needs to keep a 4-stroke engine in peak condition.

1. Engine Oil — Change Every 50 Hours

Engine oil is the single most important maintenance item. Old oil loses its viscosity, thickens, and deposits sludge on internal components. Change every 50 operating hours or at the start of every season (whichever comes first). Use SAE 30 or SAE 10W-30 for Indian temperature ranges. Balwaan P-92W 4-stroke engine oil is recommended for all 4-stroke agricultural machines.

2. Air Filter — Clean Weekly, Replace Every Season

Farming environments are dusty. A clogged air filter starves the engine of air, causing rich fuel mixture, black smoke, power loss, and higher fuel consumption. Tap the paper element on a hard surface weekly to remove dust. Replace the filter every season or sooner in very dusty conditions.

3. Spark Plug — Inspect Monthly, Replace Annually

A fouled spark plug causes hard starting, misfiring, and rough running. Remove and inspect monthly. The electrode gap should be 0.6 to 0.7mm. Clean carbon deposits with a wire brush. Replace once a year even if it looks fine. Cost: Rs 80 to 150 per plug.

4. Fuel System — Use Fresh Petrol

Stale petrol (stored over 30 days) degrades and clogs carburettor jets. Always use fresh petrol. If storing the machine for over 2 weeks, drain the fuel tank and carburettor float bowl completely. This prevents gum and varnish buildup.

5. Cooling System — Keep Fins Clean

4-stroke agricultural engines are air-cooled. Dirt and chaff pack into the cylinder head cooling fins, causing overheating. Clean fins with a brush after every 10 hours of operation. Never run the engine with the cooling air shroud removed.

6. Seasonal Storage

  • Drain fuel completely
  • Change engine oil before storage
  • Remove spark plug, pour a few drops of oil into the cylinder, pull the starter rope slowly to coat the cylinder walls
  • Store in a dry, covered location
  • Cover the exhaust with a cloth to prevent insects nesting
