Best Spark Plug for Brush Cutter — Complete Replacement Guide

The Spark Plug — Small Part, Big Impact

The spark plug ignites the fuel-air mixture in your brush cutter engine. A fouled, worn, or wrong spark plug is the second most common cause of hard starting and poor performance after a dirty air filter. Replacing a spark plug costs ₹60–₹150 and takes 5 minutes — it can save hours of troubleshooting.

How to Know Your Spark Plug Needs Replacement

  • Engine won't start despite good fuel and air filter
  • Engine starts but misfires or cuts out under load
  • Plug electrode is black and sooty (rich mixture or oil fouling)
  • Electrode is white or grey and eroded (lean mixture or overheating)
  • Electrode tip is visibly worn or cracked
  • Last replacement was over 100 hours ago or 1 season

How to Read Spark Plug Colour

Colour Meaning Action
Light tan / grey Normal — correct mixture Clean and reinstall if electrode is good
Black and sooty Rich mixture or oil in fuel Check fuel ratio; clean or replace plug
White / blistered Lean mixture or overheating Check air leaks, fuel delivery; replace plug
Wet with fuel Flooded engine Dry plug, clear engine, reinstall

Correct Spark Plug for Common Brush Cutter Models

When in doubt, use NGK CMR6H. It is the most widely compatible plug for 2-stroke brush cutters sold in India.

How to Replace a Spark Plug

  1. Let the engine cool completely — never work on a hot engine.
  2. Remove the spark plug cap (black rubber boot).
  3. Use a spark plug wrench (usually 19mm) to unscrew the old plug.
  4. Check the electrode gap of the new plug with a feeler gauge — set to 0.6–0.7mm.
  5. Thread in the new plug by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  6. Tighten with the wrench — snug but not overtightened (about ¼ turn past hand-tight).
  7. Reattach the plug cap firmly.

Price Guide

  • NGK CMR6H (genuine): ₹80–₹150 at authorised dealers
  • Champion equivalent: ₹80–₹120
  • Generic plugs: ₹40–₹70 (not recommended — inconsistent gap and quality)
