Chainsaw Maintenance Guide — Keep Your Chainsaw Running for Years

Chainsaw Maintenance Guide for Indian Farmers
A properly maintained chainsaw lasts 5–8 years. Neglect leads to chain derailment, motor seizure, and dangerous kickback. Follow this complete maintenance schedule.
Before Every Use
- Check bar oil: Bar oil reservoir must be full — dry bar ruins chain and bar within minutes of cutting
- Check chain tension: Pull chain away from bar — should have 2–3mm slack. Too loose = dangerous derailment. Too tight = overheating.
- Inspect chain sharpness: Dull chain = more effort, more heat, faster wear. Sharpen every 5–8 hours of cutting.
- Check fuel: Fresh petrol + 2-stroke oil at 25:1 ratio
- Safety check: Chain brake, throttle lock, all guards in place
After Every Use
- Clean bar groove with groove-cleaning tool or small screwdriver
- Remove chain and bar, clean all sawdust and sap
- Apply bar oil to chain before storage
- Clean air filter (tap out sawdust)
- Check and tighten any loose bolts
Weekly (Every 10–15 Hours)
- Sharpen chain: Use round file (diameter per chain pitch) at correct angle (25–35°). File all cutters equally.
- Check bar wear: Inspect bar rail for even wear. Flip bar regularly to wear evenly.
- Clean spark plug: Remove, check for deposits, clean with wire brush, check gap (0.6–0.7mm).
- Inspect chain sprocket: Worn sprocket accelerates chain wear — replace at 2 chain replacements.
Monthly (Every 50 Hours)
- Replace air filter
- Replace spark plug
- Check chain drive links for cracks
- Inspect bar tip sprocket (rollernose bar) — lubricate with grease through hole
- Check carburettor adjustment — idle speed and mixture
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- ❌ Running without bar oil — destroys chain and bar
- ❌ Cutting with dull chain — safety hazard and engine overload
- ❌ Using wrong fuel mix ratio
- ❌ Ignoring air filter — biggest cause of poor performance
- ❌ Overtightening chain — causes overheating and bar damage
