Chainsaw Safety Guide for Indian Farmers
A chainsaw is one of the most dangerous tools on a farm if used incorrectly. This safety guide ensures you and your workers stay safe while getting the job done.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Helmet/hard hat: Protects from falling branches
- Face shield or safety glasses: Flying chips and sawdust
- Ear protection: Chainsaw noise (95–115 dB) causes permanent hearing damage
- Cut-resistant gloves: Chain contact to hands most common injury
- Steel-toe boots: Dropped chainsaw or rolling log
- Cut-resistant leg protection (chaps): Chain contact to leg — most serious chainsaw injuries
Before Starting
- Inspect chain tension — 2–3mm slack, all teeth present
- Check chain brake functions correctly — push guard forward to engage, pull back to release
- Check bar oil level — full before each session
- Inspect fuel — no leaks
- Plan escape routes — where will you step if tree falls wrong direction?
Safe Cutting Technique
- Start engine on ground — never start in hand (drop-start banned for safety)
- Full throttle before bar contacts wood — prevents kickback
- Never cut above shoulder height
- Maintain two-hand grip at all times
- Watch for pinching: If bar gets pinched in wood, stop engine, don't force
- Clear work area — no bystanders within 2x tree height
Kickback — Most Dangerous Hazard
Kickback occurs when the chain tip contacts an object, violently throwing the bar upward toward the operator. Prevention:
- Never use chain tip for boring cuts
- Always engage chain brake when not cutting
- Ensure kickback guard (chain brake) is functional
- Use reduced-kickback chain (available for most farm chainsaws)
After Use
- Engage chain brake before setting down
- Never carry running chainsaw
- Store with bar cover/scabbard when not in use
- Keep children away from stored chainsaw
