Common Chainsaw Problems and Solutions
Chainsaw problems are usually simple to diagnose and fix. Here are the most common issues and solutions.
1. Chainsaw Won't Start
Causes: Stale fuel, dead spark plug, flooded carburettor, blocked air filter
Fix: Same as brush cutter — check fuel freshness (30-day max), clean spark plug (gap 0.6mm), try decompression if equipped, clean air filter. For flooding: leave 10 minutes with choke OFF, then try again.
2. Chain Won't Move / Clutch Slipping
Causes: Chain brake engaged, clutch worn, chain too tight
Fix: Check chain brake is released (push guard forward to engage, pull back to release). Adjust chain tension — 2–3mm slack at mid-bar. Worn clutch needs service centre replacement.
3. Chain Derails (Comes Off Bar)
Causes: Chain too loose, worn sprocket, cutting forces on side of bar
Fix: Tighten chain to correct tension. Stop cutting in awkward angles that put lateral force on chain. Replace worn sprocket.
4. Chainsaw Cuts Slowly / Poorly
Causes: Dull chain (most common), incorrect chain pitch, worn bar
Fix: Sharpen chain with correct round file (diameter depends on chain pitch). If all cutters are severely worn, replace chain entirely (₹300–₹800).
5. Excessive Chain Oil Consumption
Causes: Oil pump set too high, oil pick-up tube loose, oil too thin (cold weather)
Fix: Adjust oil pump flow (check manual). Inspect oil pick-up tube connection. Use proper bar and chain oil — not used engine oil.
6. Engine Overheating
Causes: Running without bar oil (no lubrication creates friction heat), blocked cooling fins, dull chain (motor works harder)
Fix: Always start session with full bar oil reservoir. Clean cooling fins. Sharpen chain.
7. Excessive Vibration
Causes: Worn anti-vibration mounts, unbalanced chain (broken links), loose bar mounting bolts
Fix: Replace anti-vibration mounts (₹100–₹400). Check chain for broken or missing links — replace if found. Tighten bar mounting bolts.
Safety Reminder
Stop immediately if: chain brake fails, unusual smoke/smell, chain derails repeatedly. Never operate faulty chainsaw — risk of serious injury.
