Common Power Sprayer Problems and Solutions
Power sprayer problems interrupt your spraying schedule at the worst times. Here are the most common issues and how to fix them on the spot.
1. Engine Won't Start
Causes: Fuel empty, stale fuel, spark plug fouled, air filter blocked, choke position wrong
Fix: Check fuel (fresh petrol). Clean/replace spark plug. Clean air filter. Start procedure: choke ON, 2 primer pumps, pull starter 3–4 times, then choke to half when engine fires. See brush cutter won't start guide for detailed steps — same engine principles apply.
2. Low Spray Pressure
Causes: Worn pump valves, blocked nozzle/filter, engine not at full throttle, air leak in suction
Fix: Run engine at full throttle. Remove and clean nozzle tip. Clean inlet filter strainer. Check suction hose for air leaks — pinch hose, if pressure improves, suction has a leak. Worn pump valves need valve kit replacement.
3. No Spray / Pump Not Drawing Liquid
Causes: Suction filter blocked, suction hose not submerged, air leak in suction line, pump valves stuck
Fix: Ensure suction hose is fully submerged. Clean suction filter. Check hose connections for air leaks. Prime pump — pour small amount of water into pump inlet before starting.
4. Pulsating / Uneven Pressure
Causes: Worn pump diaphragm (diaphragm pumps), damaged piston (piston pumps), valve partially blocked
Fix: Replace pump diaphragm kit (₹200–₹600). Clean all pump valves thoroughly. Check for air in pump by priming with clean water before chemical.
5. Spray Nozzle Leaks / Drips
Causes: Worn nozzle O-ring, damaged nozzle seat, loose nozzle nut
Fix: Tighten nozzle nut. Replace O-ring (₹10–₹20). Replace nozzle if seat is damaged. Never overtighten — cracks the nozzle body.
6. Engine Overheating
Causes: Blocked cooling fins, low oil (4-stroke), continuous operation over 2 hours, incorrect fuel mix (2-stroke)
Fix: Take 20-minute break every 2 hours. Check oil level before every session. Clean cooling fins with brush. For 2-stroke, verify correct oil ratio in fuel mix.
7. Fuel Leaks
Causes: Cracked fuel tank, loose fuel cap, deteriorated fuel pipe, carburettor flooding
Fix: Fuel tank cracks — use epoxy seal or replace tank. Tighten or replace fuel cap. Replace fuel pipe. Flooding carburettor — clean float and needle valve.
Preventive Summary
- ✅ Clean air filter every 10 hours
- ✅ Check oil before each use (4-stroke)
- ✅ Clean nozzle/filter after every use
- ✅ Never run on stale fuel (30+ days old)
