Common Water Pump Problems and Solutions
Water pump failures during irrigation season cause significant crop loss. Here are the most common problems and how to fix them quickly.
1. Pump Won't Prime / No Water Flow
Causes: Air in suction line, suction inlet not submerged, suction filter blocked, foot valve stuck
Fix: Check suction hose fully submerged. Clean suction strainer. Fill pump casing with water (prime) before starting. Check foot valve opens freely. Re-prime by pouring water into pump inlet.
2. Low Water Output / Weak Flow
Causes: Partially blocked strainer, worn impeller, engine not at full RPM, air leak in suction
Fix: Clean intake strainer. Run engine at full throttle. Check all suction hose connections for air leaks. If impeller worn, service needed.
3. Engine Starts but Pump Doesn't Pump
Causes: Loose impeller coupling, damaged impeller, pump not primed
Fix: Check engine-pump shaft coupling is tight. Reprime pump. Broken impeller needs workshop replacement.
4. Pump Vibrates Heavily
Causes: Cavitation (pump running dry), debris in impeller, misaligned shaft
Fix: Ensure water source level is above minimum — pump drawing air causes cavitation. Clean debris from impeller. Check shaft alignment if recently serviced.
5. Engine Overheating
Causes: Low oil (4-stroke), air filter blocked, continuous operation over 4 hours, stale fuel
Fix: Check oil before every use. Clean air filter. Rest engine 20 minutes every 3–4 hours. Use fresh petrol.
6. Water Leaking from Pump Body
Causes: Worn mechanical seal, cracked pump casing
Fix: Mechanical seal replacement (₹200–₹800) at service centre. Cracked casing needs replacement.
Preventive Maintenance
- Check oil before every start
- Clean strainer monthly
- Never run pump dry — kills impeller
- Drain pump for storage
