Power Sprayer Maintenance Guide
A petrol power sprayer is a significant investment. Proper maintenance extends sprayer life to 7–10 years. Here's a complete maintenance guide for knapsack and HTP sprayers.
After Every Use
- Flush pump with clean water: Run engine for 5 minutes with clean water in tank. Flush chemical residue from pump, valves, and nozzle.
- Drain tank completely: Never store sprayer with chemical inside — corrodes pump seals and brass components.
- Clean nozzle and lance: Rinse thoroughly, check for blockage.
- Check oil level: 4-stroke engines need oil check after each use. Add if below minimum.
- Wipe engine exterior: Remove chemical splashes from engine to prevent corrosion.
Weekly Maintenance (Every 10–15 Hours)
- Air filter: Remove foam filter element, wash in soapy water, squeeze dry, reinstall. Paper filter — tap gently, replace if damaged.
- Spark plug: Remove and check electrode — clean carbon with wire brush. Re-gap to 0.6–0.7mm if needed.
- Pump pressure test: Spray at full throttle — pressure should be consistent. Fluctuating pressure = valve or diaphragm issue.
- Check all hose connections: Look for leaks at joins. Replace worn O-rings.
- Lubricate pump crankshaft: HTP pumps need regular grease on crankshaft bearings.
Monthly Maintenance (Every 50 Hours)
- Engine oil change: 4-stroke engines — drain and replace engine oil (SAE 10W-30 or as per manual).
- Fuel filter: Replace fuel filter every 50 hours or if engine starves for fuel.
- Pump valve check: HTP pumps — inspect inlet and outlet valves for wear. Replace if pump loses pressure.
- Drive belt check (belt-drive models): Check tension and wear. Replace if cracked or glazed.
- Tank cleaning: Inspect tank interior for scale or residue buildup. Clean with citric acid solution if needed.
End-of-Season Storage
- Drain all fuel — run engine until it stops from fuel starvation
- Add a small amount of engine oil to cylinder through spark plug hole, pull starter to distribute
- Flush pump completely with clean water, then WD-40
- Remove and clean spark plug, store separately
- Store in dry, covered location
Common Maintenance Mistakes
- ❌ Storing with chemical in tank
- ❌ Running 4-stroke engine low on oil
- ❌ Using stale petrol (2+ months old)
- ❌ Ignoring air filter — biggest performance killer
