Water Pump Maintenance Guide
An agricultural water pump works harder than almost any other farm tool — pumping thousands of litres during each irrigation season. Proper maintenance ensures 7–10 year lifespan.
Before Every Use
- Check engine oil (4-stroke): Add SAE 10W-30 if below minimum — most important daily check
- Check fuel: Fresh petrol for petrol pumps, diesel for diesel sets
- Inspect suction hose: No cracks, properly submerged in water
- Check strainer/filter: Clean any leaves, debris from intake strainer
- Prime pump: Fill pump casing with water before starting if not self-priming
Weekly Maintenance (Every 10 Hours)
- Air filter: Clean foam element, replace if damaged. Dusty conditions — clean every 5 hours
- Fuel filter: Check for discolouration — replace if blocked
- Check all connections: Suction and discharge hose clamps tight
- Inspect impeller housing: No unusual sounds when pump runs
Monthly Maintenance (Every 50 Hours)
- Change engine oil (4-stroke) — warm oil drains better
- Replace air filter
- Clean carburetor float bowl (petrol) — drain old fuel residue
- Inspect mechanical seal for drips — minor drip is normal, heavy drip = replace seal
- Check belt tension on belt-drive models
End-of-Season Storage
- Drain pump body completely — water left in pump causes corrosion and freeze damage in winter
- Run petrol engine until fuel-starved (drain carb)
- Apply thin oil coat to impeller shaft
- Store in covered dry location
Submersible Pump Maintenance
- Check cable insulation for damage monthly
- Clean strainer guard every season
- Check shaft seal annually
- Remove from bore well for storage in dry season
