Brush Cutter Won't Start — Common Causes and Fixes
A brush cutter that won't start is frustrating — especially during a busy farming season. Here are the most common reasons a brush cutter won't start and how to fix each one.
1. No Fuel or Wrong Fuel Mixture
Symptom: Engine cranks but doesn't fire. Doesn't smell like petrol.
Fix: Check fuel tank — it may be empty. For 2-stroke brush cutters, ensure you're using correct petrol-oil mixture (typically 25:1). Using pure petrol in a 2-stroke engine will cause immediate seizure.
2. Dirty or Flooded Carburetor
Symptom: Engine cranks, may even fire briefly, then dies. Smell of strong petrol.
Fix: Remove air filter and let engine sit 10 minutes with choke OFF. Try starting with throttle at half. If this fails, clean or replace carburetor. Stale petrol (30+ days old) is the #1 cause of carburetor blockage.
3. Fouled or Dead Spark Plug
Symptom: Pull cord feels normal but no ignition. No sound of engine trying to fire.
Fix: Remove spark plug. Check for black carbon deposits — clean with wire brush. Check electrode gap (0.6–0.7mm). If cracked or heavily worn, replace. A ₹80–₹150 spark plug often solves a no-start problem instantly.
4. Blocked Air Filter
Symptom: Engine starts with choke ON but dies when choke OFF.
Fix: Remove and clean or replace air filter. A blocked air filter starves the engine of air, causing it to run rich and stall. On dusty farms, clean air filter every week.
5. Choke Position Wrong
Symptom: Engine floods when trying to start cold.
Fix: Cold start procedure: Choke ON, 2–3 primer pushes (if primer bulb exists), pull cord 3–4 times. Once engine fires briefly, move choke to HALF, then OPEN when engine warms. Do not pull cord more than 5–6 times with choke ON — causes flooding.
6. Faulty Primer Bulb
Symptom: Primer bulb doesn't fill with fuel or has cracks.
Fix: Replace primer bulb — available at ₹50–₹200. A cracked bulb draws air instead of fuel, preventing engine from starting.
7. Old or Stale Petrol
Symptom: Machine was stored for 2+ months and won't start.
Fix: Drain old fuel completely. Clean carburetor. Refill with fresh petrol (and fresh 2-stroke oil mix if applicable). Stale petrol gums up the carburetor jets.
Emergency Field Fix Steps
- Check fuel — is there fresh petrol?
- Remove air filter — clean or temporarily run without it
- Remove spark plug — clean and check gap
- Re-check fuel mixture ratio (2-stroke)
- Try starting — if still no start, carburetor cleaning needed
