Common Brush Cutter Problems and How to Fix Them

Common Brush Cutter Problems and Solutions
Even the best brush cutters develop problems over time. Here are the most common brush cutter problems faced by Indian farmers and how to solve them without visiting a service centre.
1. Engine Won't Start
Causes: Dead spark plug, blocked air filter, stale fuel, wrong fuel mix (2-stroke), flooded carburetor
Fix: Check spark plug first (₹80–₹150 replacement). Clean air filter. Drain old fuel, refill fresh. For 2-stroke, verify 25:1 mix ratio. See our detailed won't start guide.
2. Engine Starts but Won't Rev Up
Causes: Blocked carburetor jets, dirty fuel filter, air filter clogged
Fix: Clean fuel filter (₹50–₹100 replacement). Clean or replace air filter. Spray carburetor cleaner into jets. If throttle cable is stiff, lubricate or replace.
3. Excessive Vibration
Causes: Bent or unbalanced cutting blade, loose blade bolt, worn anti-vibration mounts
Fix: Inspect blade for bending or damage — replace if bent. Tighten blade bolt to specified torque. Check anti-vibration mounts on handle — replace if worn. Never run with a damaged blade.
4. Engine Overheating
Causes: Blocked cooling fins, incorrect fuel mix (2-stroke), continuous operation without breaks, blocked air filter
Fix: Clean engine cooling fins with brush. Take 15-minute break every 2 hours. Check fuel mix ratio. Clean air filter. Run at lower throttle during high ambient temperature.
5. Cutting Head Won't Spin
Causes: Clutch worn or slipping, drive shaft damaged, gearbox failure
Fix: Engage clutch by revving engine — if head still doesn't spin, clutch needs replacement. Check flexible drive shaft for kinks or breaks. Gearbox failure requires service centre visit.
6. Engine Runs Rough / Misfires
Causes: Fouled spark plug, incorrect idle adjustment, water in fuel
Fix: Replace spark plug (always keep a spare). Adjust idle screw (small clockwise turns) if engine stalls at idle. Drain and replace fuel if water contamination suspected (fuel appears cloudy).
7. High Fuel Consumption
Causes: Air filter blocked (rich mixture), carburetor float too high, running at maximum throttle
Fix: Clean air filter. Have carburetor float level checked at service centre. Run at 70–80% throttle for most tasks — maximum throttle only when cutting thick vegetation.
8. Blade Keeps Stopping
Causes: Blade hitting rocks/hard objects, clutch slipping, cutting head jammed with grass
Fix: Clear grass wrap from cutting head after every 30 minutes of use. Avoid running blade over rocks and soil at high speed. If clutch is slipping, service required.
Preventive Maintenance Checklist
- ✅ Clean air filter every 10 hours
- ✅ Replace spark plug every 100 hours
- ✅ Drain stale fuel after 30 days storage
- ✅ Sharpen blade every 25 hours
- ✅ Lubricate drive shaft every 50 hours
